Design Squad Global (DSG) is one of the projects we are running as part of the Y-Zone programme. The main objective of DSG is to empower young children to collaborate on solving real-world engineering problems. The project connects kids between the ages 10-13 all over the world. Through working together in hands-on activities that challenges their creativity and problem-solving ability, the kids learn how to express and develop their ideas. During the DSG sessions the kids learn how to share their own perspectives, while appreciating and learning from others experiences. They also begin to see that they can apply science and engineering in their own lives when encountering every-day issues.
We are running the Design Squad Global project with Khwezi Primary School. This project consists of 10 sessions with kids in grade 5, 6 and 7. The response we have seen is that the kids are learning and actually using engineering terms and phrases such as “defining the need” and “testing and evaluating” their “prototypes”.
